Joining a table: the unwritten rules

When your bet can go down at a casino table, what a seat asks of you, whose decisions count at your spot, and which table rules are written down.

Nobody has ever shown you how to sit down at a casino table. Almost nobody is ever shown. What the sign beside the table means is the next lesson, and buying chips was the one before; this one is the minute in between.

Before we start: every seat at a blackjack table is taken, and you would like to play. What can you do? Nothing is scored; the answer comes at the end.

The short answer

Sit down whenever you like; the bet waits. Once the first card of a round is out, no new bet is accepted. A seat at blackjack means a bet on every round, and the decisions at your spot are yours alone — nobody else’s advice counts. Whether you can bet from behind a full table depends on whose rules the casino plays by. At roulette nothing moves after “no va más”, and in the poker room the phone stays out of play.

Leo and Maya stand behind two empty chairs at a cleared blackjack table, each with a hand on a chair back, the green felt in front of them bare but for its painted betting shapes.
Maya smiling, explaining with an open hand.

People think the hard part of a first table is the game. It is not. The hard part is the minute before you sit, and almost none of it is unwritten: it sits in the rulebooks published for the casinos.

Taking a seat

At a blackjack table you can sit down at any moment; it is the bet that waits. Under the rules Lotería de Córdoba publishes, no bet is accepted once the first card of a round has been drawn, so a bet goes down in the gap before the next round.

The round has started and the first cards are out. Spot 4 is open, and a bet on it waits for the next round.

A seat is not somewhere to watch from. The blackjack rules of two provinces put it in one line: a player in a seat bets on every round, and one who does not leaves the seat free.

And a table may need company before it starts. Under Lotería de Córdoba’s rules, the game starts with at least three seated players making three or more bets.

Maya with one palm raised in a gentle stop gesture.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

Sit down when you are ready, not when the dealer is halfway round the table. Nobody minds a player who waits for the next round: that is how the rules are written.

A full table, and a bet from behind

When every seat is taken, what happens next depends on whose rules the casino plays by, and two of the rulebooks quoted here say opposite things.

Every spot is taken, and you are on your feet. Whether a bet from here is allowed depends on the rulebook.

  • Under IPLyC Buenos Aires’s rules — allowedA standing player may bet in the box of their choice and goes along with the choices of the player seated there, without deciding alone. The seated and the standing player’s bets together must stay inside the table’s maximum.
  • Under Lotería de Córdoba’s rules — not allowedBets from standing players are not accepted, and nobody may add a bet to another player’s box.

Our advice, not a rule: before a chip goes down from behind somebody’s seat, ask the dealer which way this table works.

Your spot, your decisions

Once your bet is down, the rules settle two things: what you may still do with it, and whose word counts at your spot.

  • Your hand — yours to decideHow much to bet, whether to take a card, double, insure or split: the decisions at a spot are strictly the player’s own.
  • Somebody else’s advice — counts for nothingIndications from other players or onlookers have no validity, and one province’s rules go further: nobody may advise a player at all.
  • Your bet, once it is down — changed only as the rules provideNo bet may be raised, lowered or taken back other than in the ways the rulebook provides: doubling, splitting, insurance.
  • Notes of the game — not permittedOne line of IPLyC Buenos Aires’s rules, with no exception attached.
  • Playing for somebody else — forbiddenPutting bets together is forbidden outright, and so is playing for a third person.
  • Bets between players — not allowedPlayers may not make bets or challenges among themselves, or challenge the dealer.
Maya with a finger raised and a knowing look.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

The player at the next spot will tell you what they would do. You can listen, nod and do whatever you meant to do: under these rules their opinion has no weight at all.

At the roulette table

Roulette has a track of its own. Three rules are worth knowing before your first spin.

  1. The call closes the table. Once the dealer calls “no va más”, no bet may be made, and none already down may be taken back or changed.
  2. A bet on the number that came up stays put. It may not be withdrawn or changed until it has been paid in full.
  3. Chips are placed, not thrown. Placement must be clear and precise, so the bet says what you intend, and a bet is paid on what the chip marks, never on what the player meant.

The ball has landed, and the dolly stands on the number. Chips on that number stay where they are until the dealer has paid them.

In the poker room

The poker room has a track of its own too. What the published rules ask of a player at a poker table, in order:

  • JoiningAt the start of a game or in the middle of one, with at least the table’s minimum and no more than its maximum, if one is set.
  • More chipsBought between hands, before the next one starts.
  • Your phoneNot used during play. A player who takes a call during a hand is warned and can be removed from the game.
  • A breakUp to two hands away, at your own request, without losing the seat.
  • LeavingOnly when a hand has finished, and out loud. Leaving another player to bet for you is forbidden.

The button (the disc that marks which poker seat is dealing this hand; it moves one seat on every hand) marks which seat is dealing this hand, and the two blinds (the two forced bets that start a poker hand, and the two amounts a game is named by) sit to its left. Seat 6 is free.

Tips

No rule quoted on this page asks for a tip, and none names an amount. The one rulebook here that mentions tips at all, Lotería Nacional’s rules for punto y banca, gives the croupier the job of receiving them and dropping them into the slot kept for that purpose.

Maya with a hand on her chest, speaking gently and seriously.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

If you want to thank a dealer, that is your call. It is money from the same limit as everything else on the table tonight, so decide it the way you decide a bet: before you sit down.

Who has the last word

Under IPLyC Buenos Aires’s blackjack rules, the house may ask a player to leave the game for not keeping to the rules, or for not behaving decently towards the staff and the other players.

And where a rulebook runs out, the room decides. Lotería de Córdoba’s blackjack rules leave any doubt about what they mean, and any situation they do not cover, to the authorities of the gaming room alone. Lotería Nacional’s poker rules give the casino’s management the say on anything they do not foresee, and make its decision on any special situation during a game final.

A question marked “New situation” asks you to use the lesson on a case it did not show.

1You reach a blackjack table where the first card of the round is already out, and a spot is open. When can your bet go down?

Show the answer

Answer: Before the first card of the next round. No bet is accepted after the first card of a round has been drawn.

  • Before the first card of the next round No bet is accepted once the first card of a round has been drawn, so the next round is the first one you can join.
  • Once the dealer has dealt the other players Later in the round is no better: the bet waits for the next one.
  • Straight away, so the dealer deals you in The round closed to new bets with its first card.
2Every seat at a blackjack table is taken. Can you bet from behind a seated player?

Show the answer

Answer: It depends on the rulebook: one allows it, with the seated player deciding; another does not. Under one province’s rules a standing player may bet in a seated player’s box and goes along with that player’s decisions; under another’s, bets from standing players are not allowed at all.

  • No, nowhere: only seated players bet One province’s rules make room for a bet from behind, as long as the seated player decides.
  • Yes, everywhere: a bet is a bet Not under the rules that forbid bets from standing players.
  • It depends on the rulebook: one allows it, with the seated player deciding; another does not Two of the rulebooks quoted here say opposite things about a bet from a player on their feet.
3A stranger at the table keeps telling you when to take a card. What weight does that have?

Show the answer

Answer: None: the decisions at your spot are yours alone. Decisions at a spot are strictly personal, and indications from other players or the public have no validity.

  • It decides the hand if you nod Nodding does not hand the decision over to anybody.
  • It counts if the dealer hears it The dealer hearing it changes nothing: the decision is the player’s.
  • None: the decisions at your spot are yours alone What other players or onlookers say has no validity.
4The dealer has called “no va más” at a roulette table. What can you still do with your chips on the table?

Show the answer

Answer: Nothing: no bet may be made, moved or taken back. After the call, no bet may be made, and none already made may be taken back or changed.

  • Move them, but not take them back Moving a bet is changing it, and that is closed too.
  • Take them back, but not add any Taking a bet back is closed as well as adding one.
  • Nothing: no bet may be made, moved or taken back The call closes the table to every change.
5You are in a poker game and need a short break. What keeps your seat? new situation

Show the answer

Answer: Asking for it: up to two hands away, at your own request. A player may rest for up to two hands, at their own request, without losing the seat — and may not leave another player to bet in their place.

  • Asking for it: up to two hands away, at your own request A rest of up to two hands, at the player’s own request, keeps the seat.
  • Asking a neighbour to play for you Leaving another player in charge of your bets is forbidden.
  • Leaving your chips on the table, for as long as you like The rule counts hands, not chips.

The question we opened with. It depends on whose rules the casino plays by. Under IPLyC Buenos Aires’s rules you may put a bet in a seated player’s box and go along with that player’s decisions, inside the table’s maximum for the two bets together; under Lotería de Córdoba’s rules bets from standing players are not allowed, and the answer is to wait for a seat.

How it’s worked out

Sources, numbers and hosts

Sources. Every rule on this page is quoted from the document that states it, in Spanish, with its publisher and the date we read it: the blackjack, roulette and poker rules that provincial bodies publish for their casinos, and the poker and punto y banca rules Lotería Nacional publishes. Each rule binds the casinos of the body that wrote it; where only one body publishes a rule, the page says whose it is, and where two say different things, the page shows both.

Numbers. There are none on this page: the rules it quotes are about when and how, not how much.

What this lesson does not cover. Buying chips and cashing out, the sign beside the table, the full rules of blackjack, the roulette layout and the poker room each have a lesson or a track of their own. Where one of those owns a subject, this page points at it and stops.

Hosts. Maya is an illustrated character. Her backstory, a former floor supervisor, is written for the course: she is not a real person and does not speak for any casino. The rules and numbers on this page come from the sources it cites, not from her experience.

No promise. Knowing how to join a table is not a reason to join one. Nothing on this page says an evening at a table is a good idea for you, and nothing here tells you how one would end.
