Hit, stand, double, split, declare the ace

The moves a blackjack table offers you at Córdoba tables, what each one buys, and when the table stops letting you make it — with the two other rulebooks of the country beside them.

You hold a six and a five, and the dealer shows a 7. What may you do with the hand at a Córdoba table?

The short answer

Take a card, stop, or double: a six and a five make 11, and two cards that make 11 are the one hand these rules let you double. With two cards of equal value you may split them, once; with an ace among your first two cards you declare it 1 or 11 before anything else. There is no surrender in this rulebook. Every card you take closes a window, and a double closes the hand.

Leo holds an open palm over a pair of eights lying face up on the felt while Maya looks across at the dealer’s ten of clubs; one chip sits in the betting circle between them.
Leo smiling, explaining with an open hand.

Leoformer dealer · rules and maths

A blackjack table gives you a short list of moves, and the list shrinks as the hand goes on. Learn the list for the rules your table follows, and when each move is open, before you learn which one to pick.

The moves at these tables, and what each one buys

What you may do with a hand at Córdoba tablesEach move as the rulebook gives it
The moveWhat happensWhen it is open
Take a cardOne more card, face up; ask again as often as you like until you stop or go over 21.Until you stop, unless the two cards are a blackjack
StopNo more cards; the hand waits for the dealer’s.At any point of your hand
DoubleA second bet as large as the first, and one card dealt face down. Then the hand is over.On the first two cards, and only if they make 11
SplitTwo cards of equal value played as two independent hands, with a second bet equal to the first on the new hand.On the first two cards; one split a hand
Declare the aceAn ace among your first two cards counts 1 or 11 as you declare it, and the declaration holds until the hand is settled. Before you play, whenever one of your first two cards is an ace

Two things a blackjack page elsewhere might list are not on this one. Surrender — giving up half the bet — is not in this rulebook. And when your first card is an ace, the rulebook offers a side bet on your second card, the “desafío o seguro”: it is not a move of your hand, and it has a lesson of its own.

KKK1010
A king and a ten are a pairThe rule asks for two cards equal in value, not in rank. 64.5% of all pairs dealt are two ten-value cards; splitting them is allowed, and the chart stands on 20 instead.

When each move opens and closes

Two cards are the widest the list ever gets. Every card after that takes something away, and some moves end the hand outright.

6655
Two cards: 11Take a card, stop or double. Not a pair, so no split.
665522
Three cards: 13Take a card or stop. The double belonged to the first two cards.
8888
A split hand that draws a pairTake a card or stop: one split a hand, and it has been made.

A double is the strictest of the moves: one card, face down, and nothing after it. A blackjack on your first two cards ends your play before it starts — the rulebook lets a player ask for cards only while the two cards are not a blackjack.

And an ace that is declared stays declared. Declared 11, an ace and a six are a 17 for the rest of the hand, and a large card takes it over 21; declared 1, they are a 7. Which to declare against which dealer card is the subject of the soft-hands lesson.

Three rulebooks, three lists

The list of moves is not the same everywhere in the country. Three rulebooks we read set out the moves, and they agree on most of them; where they part company, a hand that is a double at one table is a plain card at another.

Three rulebooks, three lists of movesWhat each document names; the figures on this page follow the first column

What a move you do not know costs

A move you do not know about is a move you never make, and on the hands where the chart wants it, that has a price. Two of them, on 10 units:

Two moves left unusedThe average result of each play, per hand
The handWith the moveWithout itGiven up each time
A six and a five against a 6: double+6.74 units+3.37 units3.37 units
Two eights against a 6: split+2.82 units−1.57 units4.39 units

A plus sign means the hand is in your favour on average; it can still lose, and over all hands the house keeps its edge. Amounts are in betting units, not pesos: a unit can stand for any amount, and the arithmetic is the same at any scale.

Played by the full chart, these Córdoba rules leave the house 2.081% of every bet. The house keeps its edge; the chart only makes it smaller. Knowing the moves lowers the price of playing; it does not decide how a hand, or an evening, ends.

The second bet, with Maya

Maya smiling, explaining with an open hand.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

Two of these moves put more money on the cloth in the middle of a hand: the double and the split. Nothing else changes a bet once the cards are out.

  • Your bet stays as it is. Once the deal has started, a bet is not raised, lowered or taken back, except by the moves the rulebook names.
  • The call is yours. Whether to double or split is your decision alone; advice from other players or onlookers counts for nothing.
Maya with a hand on her chest, speaking gently and seriously.

Mayaformer floor supervisor · manners, money and breaks

An evening with a few doubles and splits is an evening in which more money went down than you counted at the door. Decide the limit first, and count the second bets inside it. If the money starts to feel like money you need, stop and call one of the lines below.

Practice table

Ten hands at a Córdoba table, and one question on each: what do the rules let you do right now? Level 1 is two cards on the cloth; level 2 is a hand after a card, after a double or after a split. Which move to pick is for the lessons that follow; here the question is only which moves exist.

The practice table needs JavaScript. Here is one moment from it, with the answer.

You doubled your six and five, and the one card has arrived face down. What may you do now?Nothing: this hand is finished

Nothing: the hand is finished. A double is the one move you cannot change your mind about halfway through — you buy one card, sight unseen, and live with it.

El jugador que ha logrado con sus dos primeras cartas la suma de Once (11), puede doblar su apuesta requiriendo una sola carta que se le entregará cubierta.

Free translation: A player who has reached a total of Eleven (11) with his first two cards may double his bet, requesting a single card, which will be dealt to him face down.

You split two eights, and your first hand has drawn another eight. What may you do with that hand?Hit and stand

Hit and stand. One split a hand, and the first one used it up; a second pair arriving on a split hand is simply a total.

You split two eights, and your first hand has drawn a two: an eight and a two, 10. What may you do with it?Hit and stand

Hit and stand. The total is 10, not 11, so the double stays shut, and the two cards are not a pair.

Five quick ones. Pick an answer, then check it. No timer, no points: just whether it stuck.

A question marked “New situation” asks you to use the lesson on a case it did not show.

1You split a pair. What happens to the money on the cloth?

Show the answer

Answer: A second bet goes down, equal to the first, and each hand is played on its own. A split needs a second bet equal to the first, and the two cards are played as two independent hands. Which pairs are worth splitting is a lesson of its own.

  • The original bet is divided between the two hands Nothing is divided. The first bet stays with one card and a second one joins the other, so the money at risk on that deal doubles.
  • A second bet goes down, equal to the first, and each hand is played on its own That is the bargain: two hands, two bets, each played as an independent hand. What comes back depends on both.
  • Nothing changes: a split is just a way of holding the cards A split puts a second bet on the cloth, equal to the first, one for each hand. The rulebook gives it a clause of its own.
2You held a six and a three, took a card and now hold a six, a three and a two: eleven. May you double?

Show the answer

Answer: No: a double is made on your first two cards, and you have taken one since. A double is made on the first two cards, and only when they make 11.

  • Yes: eleven is exactly the total a double is for The total is right and the moment is wrong. The rule speaks of the first two cards, and your hand has three.
  • Only if the dealer agrees The dealer has no say in it: the rule decides when a double is open, and here it is shut.
  • No: a double is made on your first two cards, and you have taken one since The rule asks for two first cards that make 11. On the two-card version of this hand against a 6, the double was worth 3.37 units on 10 units over a plain card; the window closed when you took the card.
3At a Córdoba table you hold a six and a four against a 5. May you double? new situation

Show the answer

Answer: No: at these tables only two cards that make 11 may be doubled. The double is written for two first cards that make 11. Rules differ from province to province, and another rulebook does let a 10 be doubled: One game, three rulebooks sets them side by side.

  • No, because a double needs a pair A pair is what a split needs. A double needs two first cards that make 11.
  • Yes: a 10 is a classic total to double on Not at these tables. The double here is written for two cards that make 11, and a 10 is not on the list.
  • No: at these tables only two cards that make 11 may be doubled That is the rule. A 10 is hit or stood on like any other total.
4You split two aces, and one of them draws a king. How is that hand paid?

Show the answer

Answer: It counts as twenty-one and is paid one to one. After a split ace, an ace and a ten-value card count 21 and are paid in the “simple” way, one to one.

  • It is paid at three to two, like any blackjack Not after a split ace at these tables: the rulebook pays it in the “simple” way, one to one, as a 21.
  • It counts as twenty-one and is paid one to one That is the rule here. The hand looks like a blackjack and is not one, because it was made after a split.
  • It is a tie, because the hand was made after a split Nothing about a split makes a hand a tie. This hand is settled like any other 21, and paid one to one.
5Over an evening you split three times and doubled twice, on a bet you never changed. What did that do to the money you put down? new situation

Show the answer

Answer: Five more bets went down than hands were counted. The size of the bet stayed the same; the number of bets did not. A double and a split each put a second bet on the cloth, and the rulebook allows no other change to a bet once it is down.

  • Nothing: the bet was the same size on every hand The size of the bet, yes. The number of bets, no. A split and a double each put a second bet on the cloth.
  • It evens out, because a second bet comes back with the first It comes back only on the hands that are paid. A second bet buys a card or a hand, not a delay, and it takes the same room in the evening as the first one did.
  • Five more bets went down than hands were counted Three splits and two doubles are five extra bets. On 10 units that is five more of them out of the same evening, and the evening does not know about them unless you counted them.

How it’s worked out

Rules, numbers and hosts

Rules. The moves on this page are those of the rulebook published for Córdoba casinos: at least eight decks (the figures take exactly eight), the dealer stopping on every 17, blackjack paid 3 to 2, a double only on a two-card 11, one split a hand, an ace among the first two cards declared 1 or 11, and a dealer’s second card turned over after the players. The rulebook names no surrender, and says nothing about doubling after a split or about how many cards a split ace takes, so this page says nothing about them either; the room settles what a rulebook leaves open. The second and third columns of the table of rulebooks are read from their own documents and are not used for any figure.

Numbers. Every figure on this page is worked out when the page is built, by our blackjack engine, for the rules of the first column. The value of a move is its average result per hand over every two-card hand of that kind, shown for 10 units, each average rounded to the hundredth first. The share of pairs that are two ten-value cards counts pairs by value from a full eight-deck shoe. The house edge assumes the full chart and cards shuffled after every hand.

Hosts. Leo and Maya are illustrated characters. Their backstories, a former dealer and a former floor supervisor, are written for the course: neither is a real person, and neither speaks for any casino. The rules and numbers on this page come from the sources it cites, not from their experience.

No promise. Blackjack is played against the house. Knowing the moves lowers the price of playing; nothing on this page makes the game cost nothing, and nothing here says how an evening will end.
